A method for brainteasers, and 155 to practice it on
This course teaches a step-by-step approach to interview brainteasers. You learn to recognize the type of puzzle, pick the reasoning strategy that fits it, and talk through your thinking while you solve it. It has 21 text lessons and 155 practice brainteasers with sample answers.
Do you need it?
McKinsey, BCG, and Bain rarely use brainteasers. They test problem-solving through cases and their online assessments instead. Brainteasers come up more often at tier-2 firms, the Big 4, and boutiques. If one of those is on your list, plan for a few focused hours of brainteaser practice.
Estimation questions (“How many gas stations are there in Germany?”) are market sizing, not brainteasers. Case Interview Math Mastery covers those.
What’s inside
- Introduction: why firms use brainteasers and what interviewers look for
- The main types: math problems, logic puzzles, lateral thinking, and word puzzles, each with a worked example and a debrief of sample answers
- Strategies: deductive and inductive reasoning, spotting patterns and sequences, and approaches for logic, lateral-thinking, and word puzzles
- In the interview: communicating your thought process and staying calm under pressure
- 155 practice brainteasers across difficulty levels, each with a sample answer
How to work through it
- Read the lessons in order. Each strategy builds on the types introduced before it.
- For each practice brainteaser, talk through your approach out loud before you check the sample answer. The interviewer is testing how you reason, more than whether you know the trick.
- Compare your reasoning with the sample answer, as well as your final answer.
