By Dr. Florian Smeritschnig, former McKinsey Senior Consultant who evaluated candidates for the firm. Updated October 5, 2026.
Consulting recruiting now runs on two calendars. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain closed their summer 2027 internship applications between March 29 and August 31, 2026, and their full-time applications in July and August. Big 4 and most tier 2 firms recruit the same students in the fall, mostly from September to November. If you plan your consulting recruiting timeline around the fall career fair, you have already missed MBB.
Most deadline lists online make this worse. They blend the two calendars, and some confuse McKinsey’s full-time date with its internship date. Miss the real date and you usually wait a full year for the next cycle.
I spent 5 years at McKinsey and since 2020 my coaching clients have secured 700+ consulting offers. The candidates who miss out are rarely unqualified or not motivated enough but they often started too late to prepare. Below are the 2026-27 deadlines published by the firms and by university career centers, with a source for each, plus what to do this month for your class year.
Key Takeaways
- MBB and the rest of consulting now recruit on different calendars. For summer 2027 internships, MBB deadlines ran from March 29 to August 31, 2026. Big 4 and most tier 2 deadlines fall between September and November 2026.
- The internship moved; the full-time date did not. McKinsey’s undergraduate intern deadline jumped from July 17, 2025 to March 29, 2026. Its full-time deadline went the other way, from July 10, 2025 to August 11, 2026.
- For most US undergrads, the MBB internship application now lands in sophomore spring. The class of 2029 should expect McKinsey’s next intern deadline around March 2027.
- Interviews follow the deadline within weeks. You need to be interview-ready when you submit, not after.
- Dates vary by school, office, and degree. Treat this page as the map, then confirm your exact date with your career center and the firm’s careers page.
The Consulting Recruiting Timeline at a Glance: MBB vs Big 4 vs Tier 2
Consulting recruiting timeline, defined: the yearly sequence of application deadlines, online tests, interview rounds, and offers that consulting firms run for students. For a US undergraduate, it now starts in the spring of sophomore year for McKinsey, BCG, and Bain internships, and in the fall of junior year for most Big 4 and tier 2 internships.
Here is the 2026-27 cycle side by side, for US undergraduates applying to summer 2027 internships or full-time roles starting in 2027.
| MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) | Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) | Tier 2 (Oliver Wyman, L.E.K., Accenture Strategy, others) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internship deadlines | March 29 to August 31, 2026 | September 22 to November 1, 2026 | Split: Oliver Wyman March 29 and ClearView June 30, 2026; most others September to October 2026 |
| Full-time deadlines | July 7 to August 11, 2026 | September 22 to November 1, 2026 | July to September 2026 |
| When you apply (class year) | Internship: sophomore spring or the summer after. Full-time: the summer before senior year | Internship: junior fall. Full-time: senior fall | Depends on the firm |
| Interviews | Usually within 1 to 2 months of each deadline | Mostly October and November, many offers by Thanksgiving | Mostly September to November |
| How dates are set | National dates, reviewed on a rolling basis | Often per campus and per office | Per firm |
Sources: firm dates from Harvard FAS Career Services (June 2026) and the Binghamton Management Consulting Group tracker (updated September 19, 2026). Fall interview timing from Notre Dame’s Consulting Connect timeline.
The practical consequence: if you want both MBB and Big 4 options, you run two application campaigns six months apart. The first one starts while most of your classmates still think recruiting is a junior-year problem.
Full-time recruiting for students who didn’t intern still exists at every tier. My read is that it now works as a top-up round after interns receive return offers. That makes the internship the main entry point, and it’s the likeliest reason the firms pulled it forward. If you’re weighing which door to aim for, the guide to how to get into consulting walks through the full application process.
How the MBB Recruiting Timeline Moved Earlier (2025 vs 2026)
The biggest change in the consulting recruiting timeline is how far the MBB internship deadlines moved in one year. Compare the dates career centers published in 2025 for summer 2026 internships with the 2026 dates for summer 2027.
| Firm and role | 2025 cycle (summer 2026 interns, class of 2026 full-time) | 2026 cycle (summer 2027 interns, class of 2027 full-time) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| McKinsey Business Analyst Intern | July 17, 2025 | March 29, 2026 | About 16 weeks earlier |
| McKinsey Business Analyst (full-time) | July 10, 2025 | August 11, 2026 | About 4 weeks later |
| Bain Associate Consultant Intern | July 6 or September 2, 2025 | March 29 or August 31, 2026 | First window about 14 weeks earlier |
| Bain Associate Consultant (full-time) | July 6 or September 2, 2025 | July 19, 2026 | Single window, mid-July |
| BCG Summer Associate | June 23 or September 3, 2025 | June 2, 2026 | Three weeks earlier |
| BCG Associate (full-time) | July 14, 2025 | July 7, 2026 | One week earlier |
Sources: 2025 dates from Villanova’s MBB deadline list (June 2025); 2026 dates from Harvard FAS Career Services (June 2026). The Harvard list shows one BCG intern date; check BCG’s site for any later round at your school.
Two patterns stand out.
The internship is where the calendar moved. McKinsey and Bain both put their first summer 2027 intern deadline on March 29, 2026. For most US undergraduates, that’s the spring of sophomore year, more than a year before the internship starts. Full-time dates barely moved, and McKinsey’s came later.
Bain gave candidates a second chance; McKinsey did not. Bain ran two intern windows (March 29 and August 31), and Villanova’s career office notes that Bain fills spots as applications arrive, so the first window is the one to aim for. McKinsey ran one undergraduate intern deadline.
A warning about the deadline lists you’ll find elsewhere: some cite August 11 as McKinsey’s summer 2027 intern deadline. For US undergraduates, August 11 was the full-time date; the intern date was March 29. Degree changes the picture, too. MIT’s career office listed August 11 as the McKinsey internship deadline for its Master of Finance students. Always check the date for your own degree and school.
McKinsey, BCG, and Bain Application Deadlines (2026-27 Cycle)
Here is each firm’s 2026-27 calendar, including what’s still ahead. “Expected” dates are estimates from a student-run tracker (Binghamton’s Management Consulting Group). The firms had not announced them as of October 5, 2026.
McKinsey Application Deadline
- Business Analyst Intern (summer 2027): closed March 29, 2026.
- Business Analyst, full-time: opened July 1 and closed August 11, 2026, for students graduating between December 2026 and August 2027. Per MIT’s career office, interviews for that deadline run from August to October.
- Associate Intern (MBA): November 12, 2026.
- Next undergraduate intern deadline (summer 2028, class of 2029): expected around March 2027.
McKinsey screens most applicants with its Solve assessment shortly after they apply, then moves to case and Personal Experience Interview (PEI) rounds. The McKinsey application process guide covers each stage and how long it takes.
BCG Application Deadline
- Summer Associate (summer 2027): closed June 2, 2026. MIT’s career office lists June and July interviews for that deadline.
- Associate, full-time: closed July 7, 2026, with interviews in July and August. The Binghamton tracker lists the class of 2027 Associate role as “rolling” as of September 19, 2026, so it’s worth asking a BCG recruiter about remaining spots.
- Summer Consultant (MBA): expected November 2026.
- Next Summer Associate deadline (summer 2028, class of 2029): expected around June 2027.
Bain Application Deadline
- Associate Consultant Intern (summer 2027): two windows, March 29 and August 31, 2026. Interviews for the August window run in September and October.
- Associate Consultant, full-time: closed July 19, 2026, with interviews in July and August.
- Summer Associate (MBA): expected November 2026.
- Next intern deadline: not yet posted. The two 2026 windows (late March and late August) are the best guide.
Big 4 Consulting Internship Deadlines: Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG
The Big 4 consulting recruiting timeline runs on the fall calendar. For summer 2027 internships, the deadlines fall in the fall of junior year, six months or more after MBB’s first round closed. Much of their entry-level hiring runs through campus recruiting, so your school’s dates can differ from the ones below by a few weeks.
| Firm | Program | Who it’s for | 2026 deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| EY / EY-Parthenon | Consulting roles, internship and full-time | Class of 2028 (intern), 2027 (full-time) | September 22, 2026 (closed) |
| PwC / Strategy& | Strategy Consulting Intern, Management Consulting Intern | Class of 2028 | September 25, 2026 (closed) |
| PwC | Management Consulting Associate (full-time) | Class of 2027 | September 25, 2026 (closed) |
| KPMG | Advisory internships | Class of 2028 | Expected October 2026 |
| Deloitte | Strategy Summer Scholar (internship) | Class of 2028 | November 1, 2026 |
| Deloitte | Strategy Analyst (full-time) | Class of 2027 | November 1, 2026 |
Source: Binghamton Management Consulting Group tracker, updated September 19, 2026. These are the dates published for one school’s students; confirm yours on your career portal.
The Big 4 also run early programs for first-years and sophomores, which are worth more than they look because they put you in front of recruiters a year early. On the same tracker: EY-Parthenon Emerging Leaders (class of 2030, expected October 2026), PwC Career Preview (class of 2030, expected September 2026), and KPMG Embark and Rise plus EY Expedition (class of 2030, expected February 2027).
If you’re deciding between a Big 4 internship and holding out for MBB, read how the Big 4 compare with MBB first. A Big 4 strategy internship in the fall cycle doesn’t rule out MBB. It’s also a solid base for the MBB full-time round the following summer.
Tier 2 Consulting Application Deadlines
Tier 2 firms split into two groups: firms that copied MBB’s early internship calendar and firms that stayed on the fall calendar.
| Firm | Internship deadline | Full-time deadline | Calendar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oliver Wyman | March 29, 2026 | August 9, 2026 | Early (MBB-style) |
| ClearView Healthcare Partners | June 30, 2026 | July 15, 2026 | Early |
| L.E.K. Consulting | September 15, 2026 | August 31, 2026 | Fall |
| OC&C Strategy Consultants | September 18, 2026 | Not listed | Fall |
| FTI Consulting | September 18, 2026 | September 18, 2026 | Fall |
| Cornerstone Research | September 27, 2026 | September 13, 2026 | Fall |
| Accenture Strategy | Expected October 2026 | Not listed | Fall |
| Kearney | MBA Summer Associate expected December 2026; check your campus listing for undergrad roles |
Sources: Oliver Wyman, ClearView, L.E.K., and Cornerstone dates from Harvard FAS Career Services (June 2026); OC&C, FTI, Accenture, and Kearney from the Binghamton tracker (September 19, 2026). Oliver Wyman’s next intern deadline (class of 2029) is expected around March 2027.
This split matters for planning. If you’re targeting MBB plus Oliver Wyman, your first campaign is the spring one. If your realistic targets are L.E.K., Accenture Strategy, or the Big 4 strategy arms, your campaign is the fall one. The tier 2 consulting firms guide ranks the firms if you’re still building your list.
Your Consulting Recruiting Timeline by Class Year (October 2026)
Where you stand depends on your graduation year. Here’s the status as of October 5, 2026, for US undergraduates.
| Class | MBB status | Big 4 and tier 2 status | Your move this month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class of 2027 (seniors) | Full-time deadlines closed (July 7 to August 11); BCG Associate listed as rolling | Deloitte Strategy Analyst open to November 1; EY and PwC closed in September | Apply to open fall roles now. Ask MBB recruiters about off-cycle starts and international offices. |
| Class of 2028 (juniors) | Summer 2027 internships closed; Bain’s August 31 window was the last. Next MBB shot: full-time, July to August 2027 | Deloitte Strategy Summer Scholar to November 1; KPMG Advisory and Accenture Strategy expected in October | Apply to the remaining fall internships this month. Use the internship to strengthen your MBB full-time application next summer. |
| Class of 2029 (sophomores) | Summer 2028 cycle opens early 2027: McKinsey expected around March, BCG around June | Junior-year internships recruit in fall 2027 | Start case prep now. The calendar shift hits this class hardest. |
| Class of 2030 (first-years) | No internship roles yet; watch for first-year programs | Early programs: EY-Parthenon Emerging Leaders, KPMG Embark and Rise, EY Expedition | Apply to early programs, protect your GPA, start networking. |
Other paths work differently:
- Non-MBA master’s students: your dates can differ from undergraduate dates, as MIT’s August 11 McKinsey internship date for its MFin students shows. Use your program’s career office as the source.
- MBA students: recruiting is a separate, compressed calendar with November to January intern deadlines (McKinsey’s Associate Intern deadline is November 12, 2026). See the MBA consulting recruiting timeline.
- Experienced hires: MBB and most other firms hire experienced professionals on a rolling basis, with no annual deadline. The experienced-hire guide covers level, track, and process.
Consulting Recruiting Timeline Outside the US: Europe and the UK
The deadline-driven calendar above is mostly a US campus pattern. Elsewhere, timing looks different.
- UK: graduate schemes and internships at consulting firms mostly close between September and November, and some stay open into January or recruit on a rolling basis, according to targetjobs. Internships mainly target penultimate-year students.
- Continental Europe: MBB offices in markets like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland generally don’t run one national deadline. They review applications as they arrive and recruit year-round for both internships and full-time roles. You apply for a start date, not into a season.
- Other regions: dates and processes are office-specific. Check the careers page for the office you want, not the firm’s US page.
Rolling recruitment sounds easier, but it rewards the same thing the US calendar does. An application that arrives when the office has open seats does better than one that arrives after a recruiting push has filled them.
How Early Should You Start Preparing? Work Backward From the Deadline
Start at least 3 to 4 months before your first deadline. The reason is how fast the process moves once you apply. MIT’s career office lists BCG’s June 2 intern deadline with interviews in June and July, and McKinsey’s August 11 deadline with interviews from August to October. Your interview date is set by your application date, not by when you feel ready.
Having evaluated candidates at McKinsey, I can tell you the bar doesn’t bend for the calendar. A sophomore interviewing in spring for an internship faces the same kind of case and the same evaluation criteria as a senior interviewing for a full-time seat. What the earlier calendar removes is runway.
| Time before your first deadline | What should be done |
|---|---|
| 4 months | Do one baseline case under real conditions to find your actual gaps. Draft your resume. List target firms, offices, and dates. |
| 3 months | Build the core skills: structuring, case math, chart interpretation, communication. Start networking conversations at your target firms. |
| 2 months | Finalize your resume. Ask for referrals. Start prep for the online tests (McKinsey Solve, BCG’s online case, Bain’s online test). |
| 1 month | Run full live cases with feedback. Draft your fit stories. Have the application ready to submit. |
| Portal opens | Submit in the first weeks of the window. MBB reviews on a rolling basis. |
| 1 to 2 months after | Online test, then first-round interviews. |
With about 12 weeks, the usual approach of grinding 50 practice cases fails on time alone. Start with a baseline, find what’s actually weak, and drill that. It’s the order we use in StrategyCase coaching: baseline, diagnose, plan, teach, drill, test. If you’re preparing on your own, the StrategyCase Case Interview Academy covers structuring, chart interpretation, and case math with video lessons and thousands of practice drills.

Missed a Consulting Application Deadline? Your Options
Missing the date rarely means waiting a full year with nothing to do. Depending on your class year, you can:
- Use a second window. Bain ran two intern windows in 2026. Check whether your target firm has a later round at your school.
- Switch to the fall calendar. Big 4 and many tier 2 firms recruit from September to November, months after MBB’s first round closes.
- Aim for the full-time round. If you missed the MBB internship, the full-time deadlines the following July and August are your next shot. A strong internship elsewhere helps.
- Look at offices that recruit on a rolling basis. Many European and other international offices hire year-round.
- Apply to early programs. First-year and sophomore programs at the Big 4 and MBB put you in front of recruiters before the main cycle.
- Plan your reapplication. If you applied and were rejected, firms usually ask you to wait before applying again. Check the ban period rules before you plan your next attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does consulting recruiting start?
For McKinsey, BCG, and Bain internships, it starts in the spring of sophomore year for most US undergraduates. McKinsey’s and Bain’s first summer 2027 intern deadline was March 29, 2026. For Big 4 and most tier 2 firms, it starts in the fall of junior year, with deadlines from September to November. Full-time recruiting runs in July and August at MBB and from September to November at most other firms.
When is the McKinsey application deadline?
For the 2026-27 cycle, McKinsey’s Business Analyst Intern deadline (summer 2027) was March 29, 2026. The full-time Business Analyst deadline was August 11, 2026, and the MBA Associate Intern deadline is November 12, 2026. The next undergraduate intern deadline is expected around March 2027. Confirm it on McKinsey’s careers site once posted.
When are Big 4 consulting internship deadlines?
Mostly between September and November of junior year. For summer 2027, EY consulting and EY-Parthenon closed September 22, 2026, and PwC and Strategy& closed September 25. KPMG Advisory was expected in October and Deloitte Strategy Summer Scholar closes November 1. Big 4 dates often differ by campus, so check your school’s career portal.
Do consulting firms review applications on a rolling basis?
Most do. MIT’s career office notes that MBB fills spots on a rolling basis, and Villanova’s advises applying by Bain’s first deadline because Bain fills spots as applications arrive. Treat the deadline as the last possible day, not the target. Submitting in the first weeks of the window gives you the most open seats.
Is it too late to apply for a summer 2027 consulting internship?
Not everywhere. MBB’s last summer 2027 window closed August 31, 2026. As of October 2026, Deloitte’s strategy internship is open until November 1, KPMG Advisory and Accenture Strategy are expected to close in October, and offices outside the US often recruit on a rolling basis. If MBB is your goal, the full-time round in July and August 2027 is your next shot.
When should sophomores start preparing for consulting recruiting?
If you’re in the class of 2029, start now. McKinsey’s next intern deadline is expected around March 2027 and BCG’s around June 2027, and interviews follow within weeks. With 3 to 4 months of preparation before the first deadline, that means starting case prep by November or December 2026.

Bottom Line
The consulting recruiting timeline now has two speeds. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain close internship applications in the spring and summer of the year before, often in sophomore spring. Big 4 and most tier 2 firms recruit in the fall of junior year. Full-time rounds follow the same split. Find your class year in the table above, confirm your exact dates with your career center, and work backward at least 3 to 4 months so you’re interview-ready on the day you submit.
