The BCG online assessment is whichever screening test your BCG office places between your application and your first interview. In the US, that means the Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) plus a 35-minute online case. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it’s a 30-minute cognitive test with no calculator. In the UK, it’s a short numerical assessment.

Most guides describe “the BCG test” as if every applicant sits the same one. They don’t, and believing it gets expensive. In coaching BCG applicants, the costliest mistake I see is preparing hard for the wrong test: two weeks of chatbot-case practice, followed by an invite to a timed reasoning test where calculators aren’t allowed.

This page maps each BCG online assessment to the offices that use it, built from BCG’s own careers pages and my coaching clients’ experiences rather than forum rumors, and then routes you to a full guide for the test you’ll actually face.

Key Takeaways

  • There is no single BCG test. BCG’s global process page lists four human interview stages and no online test. Each office adds its own screen.
  • US applicants face two screens. The CCA invite arrives 30 to 90 minutes after you apply, with a 48-hour window. Selected candidates then get a ~35-minute online case about two weeks after the deadline.
  • German-speaking and some other European offices run a 30-minute cognitive test covering numerical, verbal, and logical reasoning, multiple choice, with no tools. BCG’s Nordic internship page specifies 80 questions in 30 minutes.
  • Prepare for the skill family, not the brand name. Every BCG screen tests speed reasoning, case simulation, or your profile, and each family trains differently.
  • In the US, prepare before you click submit. With the CCA landing within 90 minutes of applying, your numerical speed has to be ready on application day.

What Is the BCG Online Assessment?

Definition: The BCG online assessment is the screening test Boston Consulting Group uses to shortlist applicants before live interviews. Depending on your office and track, it is the Consulting Career Assessment (CCA), a chatbot-led online case, a timed cognitive or numerical test, Pymetrics games, or a one-way video interview.

BCG doesn’t present it as a single step. Its global interview-process page lists four stages (application, skills interview, case interview, team interview) and no online test at all. The candidate FAQ adds only that “for some positions, you may be asked to complete an online assessment.” The details live on individual office pages, which is why a candidate in New York and a candidate in Munich can compare notes and each conclude the other is wrong.

Candidates search for this step as “BCG test,” “BCG assessment,” or “BCG online test.” It’s the same step under different names. If you want the cross-firm view, including McKinsey Solve and Bain’s tests, our guide to consulting assessment tests covers every major firm’s online screen.

Why BCG screens before the first interview

Having worked at McKinsey, I know where the bottleneck in MBB recruiting sits: interviewer hours. Every first-round slot pulls a consultant, project leader, or partner away from client work, and firms guard that time closely. The online assessment is how BCG decides who earns a slot. Treat it as the first round, because functionally that’s what it is.

The BCG Online Assessments at a Glance

BCG uses five main online tests, plus a few office-specific ones covered in the next section. Here is what each measures and where it typically shows up.

TestWhat it measuresFormatTypically used inFull guide

A note on sources. The CCA timing, the online case length, and the cognitive test format come from BCG’s own careers pages. BCG publishes nothing on the rest (online case question counts, the Pymetrics games, the video step), so those figures are candidate-reported. Treat them as reliable expectations, not guarantees.

If your invite says cognitive test, pacing decides the result. StrategyCase’s BCG Cognitive Test practice gives you two full-length tests in the same 80-question, 30-minute format, so you find your pace before the real attempt counts.

Which BCG Online Assessment Will You Get? Office by Office

The table below comes straight from BCG’s own careers pages, checked in October 2026. It’s the most reliable answer to “which BCG test will I get,” because it’s what BCG tells its own applicants.

Two patterns stand out. North America runs a two-step stack: the CCA first, then the online case. The German-speaking offices and the Nordic internship track skip the case simulation entirely and run a pure reasoning test with no tools. Elsewhere, BCG mixes formats, and some offices don’t say.

These pages change every recruiting cycle, and internship and full-time tracks can differ within the same office. If your office isn’t listed or its page is vague, ask your recruiter which assessment you’ll take. It’s a normal question, and recruiters usually answer it.

Decode your invite email

Your invite is the fastest tiebreaker. The test name, and the platform sending it, tell you which guide to open.

If your invite mentions…You’re most likely facing
“Consulting Career Assessment,” “Consultant Career Assessment,” “CCA,” or SHLThe CCA
“Online case,” “Casey,” “Online Case Experience,” HireQuotient, or the older “Potential Test”The online case
“Cognitive test,” “Kognitivtest,” or “logical reasoning test”The Cognitive Test
“Numerical assessment”An office numerical test (prepare as you would for the Cognitive Test’s numerical items)
“pymetrics” or HarverThe Pymetrics games
Spark Hire, “video interview,” or “video cover letter”The one-way video interview

BCG’s US pages use both “Consultant” and “Consulting” Career Assessment for the same test. The platform names (SHL, HireQuotient, Harver, Spark Hire) come from candidate reports, and BCG can switch vendors between cycles. When the sender and the test name disagree, trust the test name.

Where the Test Sits in the BCG Interview Process

In most offices, the online assessment sits after your application and before the first round of BCG case interviews. The exact timing is what varies, and timing changes how you should prepare. Here’s how it plays out on three common paths.

BCG interview process infographic showing online assessment timing and retake rules for US undergraduate, US MBA and DACH applicants.

Path 1: A US undergraduate applying to BCG

You submit your application, and the CCA invite arrives within 30 to 90 minutes. You then have 48 hours to complete a test of about 30 to 35 minutes. That window rewards candidates who prepared before applying and punishes anyone who planned to start once the invite came.

About two weeks after the application deadline, a select group receives the ~35-minute online case. If you took it in an earlier cycle, BCG won’t prompt you to take it again. Only after that do first-round interviews begin.

Path 2: A candidate applying in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland

No CCA, and no chatbot case. In Germany and Austria, the 30-minute cognitive test is part of your virtual first round, alongside a case interview that opens with a CV discussion and moves into a case based on a real client project. You go from a no-calculator speed test into a live case, so your mental math needs to be sharp and your concentration has to last.

The second round adds two more case interviews, one in German and one in English, plus BCG Real Life: two 15-minute conversations about typical situations from a consultant’s working day. In Switzerland, the 30-minute test comes about a month before your first interview, followed by one virtual case interview and a final round of three in-person cases in Zurich.

Path 3: An MBA applying to US offices (and maybe one abroad)

US MBA applicants take both the CCA and the ~35-minute online case. The exception: if a Canadian office is your first choice, BCG’s MBA page exempts you from the online case. If you completed the CCA within the past year for a summer consultant application, you won’t take it again.

Retakes work differently for the online case. If you took it last fall for a summer role, BCG sends a short survey asking whether you want to retake it, and if you ignore the survey, your fall submission stands. And if you’re also interested in an office outside the US, that office may ask you to retake the online case under its own process.

Is the BCG Online Assessment Hard?

Yes, but each test is hard in a different way, and that difference decides how you prepare.

The Cognitive Test is the hardest per minute. On the DACH version, 80 questions in 30 minutes leaves about 22 seconds per question, with no calculator. Strong case solvers often stall here because skipping a question feels wrong to them, and this format punishes anyone who won’t skip.

The online case is the hardest to fake. It’s the first case BCG sees from you, scored on structure, data reading, math, and a spoken recommendation. Candidates consistently report that the math runs harder than free practice tests. Some 2026 candidates also report receiving it through the HireQuotient platform, with a new interface and tighter proctoring than older Casey versions.

The CCA is short but unforgiving. Its numerical items come under tight time, and its personality section checks whether your answers stay consistent across similar statements. You can’t cram a personality profile, but you can fail one by trying to game it.

Pymetrics and the video interview test no business skill, and still count. Pymetrics results are read alongside your resume rather than as a hard cutoff. A careless video recording, though, can end an application on its own.

What BCG doesn’t publish is a pass mark. No office page lists one, and candidates comparing results across offices report no consistent cutoff. Ignore forum “thresholds” and aim to be comfortably strong on accuracy and pacing.

How to Prepare for the BCG Online Assessment

Start with the one move that costs nothing: confirm which test you’re taking. Read the invite, check your office in the table above, and if anything is unclear, email your recruiter. Then prepare for the skill family your test belongs to.

Skill familyBCG tests in itWhat gets scoredHow to train
Speed reasoningCognitive Test, the CCA’s numerical items, UK and ANZ numerical tests, Brazil’s GMAT sectionAccuracy per minute without toolsTimed mental-math and logic sets with no calculator, plus a hard skip rule

ProfileThe CCA’s personality items, Pymetrics, one-way videoConsistency, traits, motivation, composure on cameraFormat familiarity, honest and consistent answers, three or four real stories

Speed-reasoning screens

These reward accuracy per minute without tools. Train with timed sets of mental math, percentages, ratios, and short logic problems, and do them without a calculator even when the real test might allow one. Our case interview math guide covers the arithmetic shortcuts that make 20-second answers possible.

The skill most candidates never practice is skipping. Set a hard cutoff, somewhere around 20 to 30 seconds, and move on when it hits. One stubborn question can cost you three simpler ones. For the GMAT-style section in Brazil, BCG itself recommends its own practice tests plus the official GMAT guide, and our free GMAT quant questions make a useful warm-up.

Case-simulation screens

The online case tests the same skills as a live BCG case, compressed into about 35 minutes with no interviewer to steer you. Build structures from scratch instead of reciting frameworks. Read exhibits until you can pull the key number in seconds, overtrain case math, and rehearse 60-second answer-first recommendations out loud for the video.

Then do at least one timed, full-length run under realistic conditions. That’s why the StrategyCase BCG Online Case Guide includes five full practice tests: once the format stops being a surprise, your attention stays on the case.

Profile screens

You can’t train a trait, but you can remove the unfamiliarity that makes people answer erratically. Learn each format in advance, answer the personality items honestly, and stay consistent across similar statements.

For the video, prepare three or four real stories (a leadership moment, a setback, why BCG) and practice delivering each in under three minutes on camera. The same stories carry straight into the BCG fit interview later in the process.

If you face two screens, prepare in arrival order

US applicants get the CCA within hours of applying and the online case about two weeks after the deadline. So build numerical speed before you submit, then shift to case simulation while you wait. In Germany and Austria, the cognitive test and a case interview share your first-round day, so practice them back to back at least once.

Why Question Banks Won’t Get You Through

Search for the BCG online assessment and you’ll find leaked PDFs and “answer sets” ranking next to real guides. They’re tempting, and they misread how these tests work.

Candidates report different questions across sittings, so memorized answers rarely match what’s on your screen. The online case changes between cycles. And the direction of BCG’s formats is clear from its own pages: timed, no tools, and in German-speaking offices, run inside the live first-round session. What gets scored is the underlying skill.

BCG says so plainly on its Swiss careers page: “We value analysis over memorized solutions.” That sentence describes the interview, and it describes the screen in front of it. It’s also the core of how I teach at StrategyCase, because modern case prep is broken whenever it trains recall instead of reasoning. Build the skill once and it pays off twice: in the online assessment, and in every case round that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every BCG applicant have to take an online assessment?

Not necessarily. BCG’s global process lists no online test, and its candidate FAQ says only that some positions require one. In practice, most consulting applicants at BCG’s larger offices face at least one screen: the CCA and online case in the US, a cognitive test in German-speaking offices, and a numerical test in the UK.

How do I know which BCG test I’m getting?

Read the invite. The test name tells you more than any forum thread: “Consulting Career Assessment” means the CCA, “online case” or “Casey” means the chatbot case, and “cognitive test” means the timed reasoning test. If the email is vague, check your office’s careers page or ask your recruiter before you start preparing.

Can you use a calculator on the BCG online assessment?

It depends on the test. BCG’s German, Austrian, Swiss, and Nordic internship pages state that the cognitive test allows no calculator or other tools. Candidates report that a calculator is allowed on the online case. For the CCA and other numerical tests, follow the instructions in your invite, and practice without one anyway so your speed never depends on it.

Can you retake the BCG online assessment?

Usually not within the same cycle. In the US, BCG doesn’t re-prompt undergraduates who already took the online case, and it offers MBA candidates who took it the previous fall an optional retake. A non-US office may ask you to take it again. If you fail a screen, plan around BCG’s reapplication waiting period and use it to fix the specific skill that cost you.

What score do you need to pass the BCG online assessment?

BCG doesn’t publish one. No office page lists a pass mark, and candidates comparing results across offices report no consistent cutoff. Treat any number on a forum as a guess, and aim to be comfortably strong on accuracy and pacing rather than barely over an imagined line.

How long after the BCG online assessment do you hear back?

It varies by office and test. In the US, the online case invite itself goes out about two weeks after the application deadline, and candidates typically report online case results within a few days to two weeks. In Switzerland, the cognitive test sits about a month before the first interview, so the gap is built into the schedule.

The Bottom Line

There’s no single BCG online assessment, only the one your office uses. Find your office in the table, decode your invite, and prepare for the skill family your test belongs to. Then open the dedicated guide for that test and work the specifics.

Whichever screen you face, the skill underneath is the one BCG tests in every round after it: clear structure, fast and accurate numbers, and a recommendation you can defend.
